On-camera vs. cage-mounted
Small on-camera monitors (5"–7") mount directly to a hot shoe or cold shoe and work solo or on a lightweight rig. Larger director's monitors (7"–17") are cage- or stand-mounted and serve as a shared reference for the director, focus puller, and DIT. For one-person shooters, a 5"–7" is the go-to. For narrative and commercial work, a larger external monitor on a C-stand or arm is standard.
Resolution and brightness for real-world use
Full HD (1920×1080) is enough for most monitoring work — you're not delivering off the monitor. 4K monitors (like the Atomos Sumo or SmallHD Cine 7) are valuable for critical focus work with 4K+ sources. Brightness matters more than resolution outdoors: 500 nits is the minimum for shade; 1000+ nits for bright exteriors. Atomos and SmallHD lead here. Check specs in nits before buying a monitor you'll use outside.
HDR and LUT support
If you shoot in a log profile (S-Log3, Canon Log 3, Arri LogC), a monitor that can load a LUT (look-up table) converts the flat log image to a viewable Rec.709 or creative look while you shoot. This prevents underexposure caused by the washed-out log preview. Monitors from Atomos, SmallHD, and FEELWORLD all support custom LUT loading. HDR monitoring (HLG, PQ/HDR10) is useful if you're delivering HDR content.
SDI vs. HDMI — which connection do you need?
HDMI is the default for mirrorless and DSLR cameras — nearly every Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm body outputs via HDMI. SDI is the professional broadcast standard: locking connectors, longer cable runs, and support for timecode/audio embedding. Cinema cameras (Blackmagic, ARRI, Sony FX9) typically output SDI. Many monitors include both; if you're on mirrorless HDMI-only, an SDI-only monitor won't work without a converter.
Key features to look for
Beyond connectivity, look for: focus peaking and magnification (for manual focus), false color (exposure reference — faster and more accurate than histogram alone), waveform and vectorscope (for color and exposure accuracy), and audio metering. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a field monitor if my camera has a flip screen?
Flip screens are fine for casual shooting, but they're small, low-brightness, and hard to read in daylight. A dedicated monitor gives you accurate color, focus tools (peaking, magnification), waveform, and false color that built-in screens can't match. For professional work, a monitor is standard kit.
What size monitor do I need?
5" is compact and works well on a run-and-gun rig. 7" is the most popular size — large enough for accurate monitoring, manageable for solo shooters. Anything larger than 7" is typically stand- or arm-mounted on set. Match size to how you work: handheld/gimbal favors smaller; tripod or narrative work supports larger.
What's the difference between Atomos and SmallHD?
Both are top-tier brands. Atomos monitors (Shinobi, Ninja V+) often double as ProRes/DNxHD recorders — great if you want to record a higher-quality file than the camera card. SmallHD (Cine 7, 702 Bright, FOCUS series) are pure monitors with excellent OS and LUT management. If recording capability matters, go Atomos. For pure monitoring, both are excellent.
What's false color and why does it matter?
False color overlays a color map on the image where each color corresponds to an exposure range — skin tones, midtones, highlights, clipping zones. It's a much faster and more reliable exposure check than eyeballing the image, especially in bright outdoor conditions where screens wash out. Once you use it, you won't go back.
Can I use a monitor with a gimbal?
Yes, but weight and balance matter. Lightweight 5" monitors are gimbal-friendly — stay under 250g if possible. Use a monitor arm or mount it to the gimbal handle rather than the camera plate to avoid affecting the balance. HDMI micro or mini cables are more gimbal-friendly than full-size.
Does my monitor need to match my camera brand?
No — monitors are brand-agnostic. Any monitor with the right input (HDMI or SDI) works with any camera that outputs that signal. A Sony monitor works fine on a Canon camera and vice versa. Buy based on specs, features, and build quality, not brand matching.
