Tilta Camera Rigging & Accessories
Tilta has established itself as one of the most trusted names in professional camera rigging, building an ecosystem that covers virtually every mounting, support, and control need on set. From their iconic cage systems to nuanced follow focus wheels and wireless lens control, Tilta gear is engineered for the realities of production — fast assembly, reliable connection points, and compatibility across dozens of camera bodies from Sony, Canon, Nikon, ARRI, RED, Blackmagic, and beyond.
Building a Tilta Rig: Where to Start
Most filmmakers begin a Tilta build with a camera cage — a protective aluminum or carbon fiber frame that wraps your body and adds 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads, NATO rails, and ARRI-standard rosette mounts. From there, you layer in accessories: top handles for handheld comfort, shoulder rigs for longer takes, side handles for additional control, and follow focus systems when pulling focus manually or via wireless motor. Tilta's Nucleus-M and Nucleus-Nano wireless lens control systems integrate seamlessly with the rest of the Tilta ecosystem, giving you precise focus, iris, and zoom control from a handheld wheel or mounted unit.
Buying Guide: Tilta Ecosystem Essentials
Camera Cages
Tilta makes body-specific cages for popular cameras like the Sony FX3, Canon R5 C, BMPCC 6K Pro, and many others, as well as universal cage options. Body-specific cages offer the most compact, integrated fit — often with dedicated ports for HDMI clamps, USB-C pass-throughs, and side plate connections. If you shoot with multiple cameras, a universal cage gives you flexibility at the cost of some precision fit.
Wireless Lens Control
The Nucleus-Nano is Tilta's entry-level wireless focus system, designed for mirrorless and DSLR shooters who need smooth, responsive remote focus without a full cinema motor setup. The Nucleus-M steps up with greater torque for cinema lenses, multi-axis support, and compatibility with larger follow focus systems. Both are popular choices for gimbal work, where reaching the focus ring is impractical.
Follow Focus Systems
Tilta's mechanical follow focus units mount to 15mm or 19mm rod systems and feature adjustable hard stops, reversible drives, and whip socket compatibility. Pairing a mechanical follow focus with a Nucleus wireless motor gives you the best of both worlds — tactile manual control with the option to go wireless.
Power Solutions
Tilta's Power Cages and battery plates support V-Mount and Gold-Mount batteries, letting you power your camera, monitor, and wireless systems from a single source on the back of your rig. This dramatically reduces cable clutter and balances weight across the build.
What cameras is Tilta compatible with?
Tilta produces body-specific cages and accessories for Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Panasonic, Z CAM, and many others. They also offer universal cage systems for cameras without a dedicated body-specific option. Check the product listing to confirm compatibility with your specific camera model.
Do I need a cage before adding other Tilta accessories?
A cage is the most common starting point because it provides the mounting threads and rail attachment points that other accessories plug into. However, some Tilta accessories — like lens control systems and certain handles — can be used independently. If you're primarily adding wireless lens control to a gimbal setup, for example, a cage may not be necessary.
What's the difference between the Nucleus-Nano and Nucleus-M?
The Nucleus-Nano is a compact, lightweight wireless focus system designed for mirrorless cameras and lighter lenses. The Nucleus-M offers higher torque for cinema glass, supports focus, iris, and zoom control on separate axes simultaneously, and integrates with larger multi-motor cinema rigs. The Nano is ideal for run-and-gun and gimbal work; the M is better suited to full cinematic setups.
Are Tilta rails compatible with other brands like ARRI or SmallRig?
Tilta uses industry-standard 15mm LWS and 19mm studio rod diameters, which are compatible with most third-party rod accessories from ARRI, SmallRig, Wooden Camera, Shape, and others. NATO rail accessories may vary by manufacturer standard, so check rail width before mixing brands.
Can I use Tilta accessories on a gimbal?
Yes — many Tilta accessories are specifically designed for gimbal use, including the Nucleus-Nano wireless focus motor, lightweight top handles, and the Tilta Gravity series of gimbals themselves. Tilta also makes gimbal-specific accessories like counterweights, mounting adapters, and focus wheels that integrate with their ecosystem.
