PTZ stands for Pan-Tilt-Zoom — cameras that can be repositioned remotely without an operator physically behind them. A single technical director can control multiple PTZ cameras from a central location, making them the backbone of houses of worship, broadcast studios, corporate conference rooms, university lecture halls, and live event production. Output Types — HDMI, SDI, and NDI Explained
The output you need drives your camera selection. HDMI is the most common and works for short cable runs (up to ~30 feet reliably) and smaller productions feeding a consumer switcher. SDI (Serial Digital Interface) is the broadcast standard — it runs over inexpensive coaxial cable for hundreds of feet without degradation, and it's the right choice for permanent church installs, TV studios, and any setup with long cable runs. NDI (Network Device Interface) turns your PTZ into a network device — video travels over your existing Ethernet infrastructure, so no new cable runs are required. NDI is increasingly the choice for modern multi-camera setups, especially when using software switchers like vMix, OBS, or Wirecast. Many cameras now offer two or three outputs simultaneously.
Control Protocols — IP, VISCA & RS-422
PTZ cameras are controlled via a joystick controller or software, but the protocol they speak matters. VISCA over IP is the most widely supported protocol today — it lets you control cameras over your network from a laptop, tablet, or controller. RS-422 (serial VISCA) is the legacy wired standard, still common in established broadcast facilities. ONVIF/IP control is used in enterprise environments. Most modern PTZ cameras support IP control alongside their legacy interfaces, giving you flexibility as your infrastructure evolves.
1080p vs. 4K PTZ — What Do You Actually Need?
For live streaming and most church or corporate applications, 1080p PTZ cameras offer better value — they're less expensive, put less load on your network and switcher, and most streaming platforms cap at 1080p anyway. 4K PTZ cameras make sense when you're recording for future editing and need room to crop and reframe in post, or when your destination display is a large 4K screen at close viewing distance. 4K NDI cameras in particular are popular for virtual production and high-end conferencing installations.
Optical Zoom & Lens Range
PTZ cameras are spec'd by their optical zoom range — 12x, 20x, 30x, and beyond. For a small conference room or tight church sanctuary, a 12x zoom covers most positions. Larger venues with cameras mounted far from the action benefit from 20x or 30x zoom to get tight on faces from a distance without losing image quality. Digital zoom extends the range further but at the cost of image quality; rely on optical zoom for clean, sharp shots.

What is NDI and why is it popular for PTZ cameras?
NDI (Network Device Interface) is a protocol developed by NewTek that carries high-quality video over standard Ethernet networks. Instead of running dedicated video cables (HDMI or SDI), NDI PTZ cameras plug into your network switch and their video is available to any NDI-compatible device on the network — software switchers, computers, recording systems. For new installations, NDI simplifies cabling significantly. Many modern PTZ cameras offer both NDI and SDI/HDMI outputs simultaneously.
How many PTZ cameras do I need for a church or conference room?
Most houses of worship start with 2–3 cameras: a wide-angle establishing shot, a close-up on the speaker/altar, and optionally a side angle or confidence monitor feed. Conference rooms typically use 1–2 cameras depending on table length and room layout. Can I control PTZ cameras with OBS or other software switchers?
Yes — most modern PTZ cameras can be controlled via IP (VISCA over IP or ONVIF) from software including vMix, OBS with PTZ plugins, Wirecast, and dedicated PTZ control software. NDI cameras integrate especially cleanly with vMix and similar software-based production environments. HDMI and SDI cameras can still be controlled via IP while feeding video separately into a hardware switcher.
What's the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom on a PTZ camera?
Optical zoom uses the camera's physical lens elements to magnify the image — quality is preserved at full resolution regardless of zoom level. Digital zoom crops into the sensor and enlarges digitally, which reduces image sharpness and introduces noise at higher levels. Always spec your installation using optical zoom range. If you need more reach than your optical zoom provides, consider a longer focal length fixed lens camera instead.
Do PTZ cameras work with standard video switchers?
Yes — PTZ cameras with SDI or HDMI outputs connect to hardware switchers (Blackmagic ATEM, Roland, etc.) exactly like any other camera source. NDI cameras connect to network-based software switchers. Control (pan/tilt/zoom) is separate from video output and typically runs over IP or RS-422 from a dedicated controller or computer.
