NiSi's reverse pattern puts the darkest band right at the transition line, tapering off toward the top of the frame, which holds back that harsh horizon-level light without over-darkening the sky further up. At 3 stops (0.9 density), it's suited to scenes with a clean, unbroken horizon like an open seascape rather than one with elements protruding above it.
